This is a beautiful hand-carved nesting doll set where the decreasing size dolls are carved out of a single white ivory wood block and then shaped by hand just using a lathe. Each doll is then hand painted using melted lac mixed with various color-yielding natural materials. No chemicals are ever used by this artisan for colors. The sheen is achieved using dried leaves of Pandan odoratissimus plant a species of screwpine native to the region.
Each of this creation reflects the hard work and creativity of the revered artisans from the village called Etikoppaka (Vishakapatnam, South India). These wooden creations have been part of the South Indian households for generations.
